We will be preparing to plant one of our tunnel houses. The tunnel house is basically a large cold frame. Seeds or plants in the tunnel house are planted directly into the ground. Since crops are covered, they can be planted and harvested much earlier. We will actually plant one of the houses with many of the crops that can be direct seeded into the garden in mid-April. This is a great way to learn the basics of planting not on a Spring garden but a Winter garden as well.

Blueberry and Raspberry Pruning and MaintenanceTime to give those blueberries a little TLC. While cleaning out the blueberry and raspberry field we will teach you how to prune and maintain these fruit bushes. Please bring clippers and water proof boots. Hanging Moss Basket Thursday May 6, 2010 from 6-8p.m. OR Saturday May 8, 2010 from 9.00-11-00 a.m. Container Garden Lectures Series' taught by Andrew Magee L.A. Enjoy a blast of summer long color by creating your own hanging moss basket. Come to Tangerini's Farm and learn to create a colorful, long lived hanging moss basket. A single basket, moss and soil will be provided. Students will select the plants they wish to use from Laura Tangerini's extensive perennial and annual selection. Extra baskets may be created for a fee to cover materials. Come and have fun, and take home something beautiful for Mother's Day. Dress to keep warm, and bring your gardening gloves. Lecture is $25.00 including one hanging basket, soil and moss.
Container Grown Vegetables Thursday May 20, 2010 from 6-8p.m. OR Saturday May 22, 2010 from 9.00-11-00 a.m. Second of two lectures in the 'Container Garden Lectures Series' taught by Andrew Magee L.A. Do you want to grow fresh vegetables, fruits or herbs but have limited space or time? Come to Tangerini's farm and learn about vegetable, fruit and herb gardens on a small scale. Grow herbs, fruit, and vegetables in containers on your patio, balcony or porch. Edible gardening is fun to learn about, beautiful to look at, and good to eat too. Take home something tasty from your local farm. We will supply the organic soil for your first container. Please feel free to fill multiple container, a nominal fee will be charged for additional soil.Dress to keep warm, and bring your gardening gloves. Lecture is $25.00, remember please...bring your containers.
"Eat What You Learn", Growing Organic Vegetables, Lecture Series Spring 2010 Lecture Series: "Eat What You Learn'", A practical guide to growing, harvesting, storing, and cooking organic vegetables. Taught by Andrew Magee L.A. A series of 3 lectures, at Tangerini's Spring Street Farm, and at Andrew's vegetable garden in Norfolk. Students will take part in a practical, hands-on organic vegetable gardening experience that will last through the spring. The course will include bed layout, soil preparation, seed selection, purchase and planting. The lecture series will give all participants the confidence to create an organic vegetable garden at their own home. You will save hundreds of dollars by growing your own produce, and stay healthy by eating well, and keeping fit. Please bring gardening gloves, and dress to keep warm. Lectures are $35.00 each there is a $15.00 discount for attending all three lectures.
"Eat What You Learn", Growing Organic Vegetables, Lecture 1 Sunday March 21, 2010 from 1-4.00 p.m. "Eat What You Learn" An introduction to organic vegetable gardening: learn how to lay out a vegetable garden, undertake soil tests, make your soils vegetable friendly and start to grow what you like to eat! The lecture will review crop selection for spring, getting seeds started inside, direct seeding, planting plugs, plant care and maintenance.
"Eat What You Learn", Growing Organic Vegetables, Lecture 2 Saturday April 24, 2010 from 1-4.00 p.m. "Eat What You Learn" The second lecture will concentrate on mid-summer crops, soil conditioning, composting and mulching, weed control and irrigation. The lecture will also consider means of plant support and introduce organic methods of pest and disease control.
"Eat What You Learn", Growing Organic Vegetables, Lecture 3 Saturday May 22, 2010 from 1-4.00 p.m. "Eat What You Learn" The third lecture will consider late summer and fall plantings even as we prepare to harvest our earliest crops. We will look at the different ways of storing harvests for eating in the winter, and keeping salads and greens growing long after the first frost of autumn.
'Design and Install a Perennial Garden' - Perennial Gardening 101 Spring 2010 Lecture Series: 'Design and Install a Perennial Garden. Taught by Andrew Magee L.A. Come and enjoy the series of three lectures at Tangerini's Spring Street Farm. Students will take part in practical, hands-on gardening. Andrew Magee, an experienced residential garden designer and licensed landscape architect, will be selecting sites in Laura Tangerini's garden to create 3 perennial flowerbeds. A garden will be created in a sunny location, a semi-shade and a shady area. Students will learn about site preparation, plant selection, and the placement of plants. Correct planting techniques and on-going care and maintenance will also be covered. All plants used will come from the farm and students will be able to purchase plants at a discount for their own garden from the extensive range offered at Tangerini's farm. So come down to the farm and take home your own new garden. Please bring gardening gloves, and dress to keep warm. Lectures are $35.00 each there is a $15.00 discount for attending all three lectures.
The Sunny Perennial Garden Saturday May 15, 2010 from 9.00-12.00 Noon, Design and Install a Sunny Perennial Garden: Site selection and analysis of the sunny garden site will be followed by choosing plants for their color, texture, blooming time and size. Once selected the plants will be placed and planted. Planting techniques to be studied, and aftercare and maintenance considered. Alternative plant selections for sunny sites will also be reviewed.
The Semi-Shade Perennial Garden
Saturday May 29, 2010 from 9.00-12.00 Noon, Design and Install a Semi-shade Perennial Garden A similar format to Lecture 1 but with emphasis on the correct plants to choose for a semi-shady garden. Students will be encouraged to use knowledge learned in the first lecture to select plants, place them in the garden, then plant and mulch the new bed. Students will also learn about splitting older perennials and care of structural plants in the garden in this lecture. Alternative plant selections for different themes and colors will also be reviewed. The Shady Perennial Garden Saturday June 5, 2010 from 9.00-12.00 Noon, Design and Install a Shady Perennial Garden For those students living in wooded, and shady neighborhoods Lecture 3 will demonstrate that you can still have a beautiful garden even if you live in a shady spot. Plant selection will concentrate on plant size, color of leaf and texture. Native plants from the woodland and meadow edge will be considered. Alternative plants will be reviewed.
Andrew Magee Landscape Architect...biography Andrew is a life-long gardener, he studied the theory of landscape architecture and garden design at the University of Greenwich, and Hadlow Horticulture College in England, and Radcliffe College, and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard in the U.S.A., graduating from Harvard with a Masters in Landscape Architecture in 2000. Andrew than spent the next 5 years working with Thomas Wirth Associates in Sherborn, MA learning the practical aspects of landscape design, and construction. Andrew started his own business in 2007 and designs gardens, and teaches throughout the New England area. His work has been featured in 'Design new england' magazine. Andrew's latest venture is to work closely with Laura and Charles Tangerini of Spring Street Farm in Millis to spread the word to all about living healthily, eating well, and enjoying New England's beautiful surroundings. Andrew is going to be teaching a number of practical, hands-on gardening courses at the farm this spring. From May 1 of 2010 Andrew will operate a studio at the farm. He will be available for consultations, and planning regarding residential garden, and organic vegetable garden design work, and installation.
